Environmental monitoring, Smart water and energy management, Assisted health and well-being: why is EU-Brazil cooperation needed? D3.1

On 30 June 2016 EUBrasilCloudFORUM released the deliverable D3.1 "Analysis and identification of the gaps and research opportunities related to cloud computing, including security".

The document, available for download, highlights three scenarios with potential priorities for cooperation between Europe and Brazil, identifies drivers for expanding research activities in the two regions and list gaps and preliminary opportunities where Europe and Brazil can already start working together.

Environmental monitoring (p.13 onwards)

Understanding climate changes, conserving and sustainably using marine resources, terrestrial ecosystems, forests, or combating desertification requires the collection and analysis of huge amounts of data (e.g. for planning and acting), that in turn require great storage and processing power, which are characteristics that fit the cloud computing paradigm. Brazil, being a continental country with a lot of diversity regarding topography and nature, has a special position for this. Certainly, for Brazil the environmental monitoring is something very strategic. Since 1998, Brazil participates in the world's largest Environmental Monitoring System, called SIVAM, which represents an expense of USD 1.4 billion (the second largest strategic project in the world until 2012) and had the goal of monitoring the Amazonia using satellites and sensors.

Smart water and energy management (p. 16 onwards)

Cloud computing (together with sensor networks, the internet of things, and big data analytics) will become a fundamental part of the cyber-physical infrastructure needed to manage energy and water resources, supporting control functions, dealing with the sensors and actuators, and collecting and converting the data to services for different stakeholders within the respective grids. Brazil has a population of 200.4 million.  Also, Brazil has one of the biggest metropolis of the world, São Paulo, with 10 million inhabitants. São Paulo and other cities in Brazil had a water crisis in 2014. The main source of electricity in Brazil is the hydraulic. A water crisis is also an energy crisis in Brazil.
In Europe, the smart water management market is primarily driven by advancement in technology in the region and smart meter compliances. Most of the utilities in the EU member countries have adopted advance solutions, such as pressure management, meter data analytics, network monitoring, and leakage detection. The EU’s 20-20-20 project states that by the year 2020, around 80% of the household meters will be replaced by smart meters and the absolute roll-out will be accomplish by 2022.

Assisted health and well-being (p.18 onwards)

Assisted Health and well-being is a key scenario for the application of cloud computing presenting demanding research challenges. In fact, cloud computing is a fundamental enabler for solving some key challenges in the area related to patient centred and mobility (national and trans-national) of health services. This includes the implementation of disruptive algorithms, protocols, mechanisms, and services to support the Big Data acquisition, storage and processing required for the implementation of personalized, precision and systems medicine solutions.
Population aging in Brazil has been particularly fast. The speed of change is shown by a very impressive drop of the fertility rate, from about 6.3 children per woman in the 1960s to its current value of 1.8 - well below the replacement rate of 2.1. At the same time, life expectancy at birth in Brazil rose from 55 years in 1960 to 73 years today. Considering this, the health care initiatives, disease prevention and health promotion, managed care, life insurance, reverse mortgages, and cheaper medicines will have a great new and expanding market. The 13.2 million seniors of today already form an important market; the nearly 50 million seniors in 2050 will form one 3.8 times larger. In Europe, the Member States are also already facing an ageing population and its consequences on stability and economic competitiveness.
 


This deliverable analyses and identifies gaps and research opportunities related to cloud computing, including security. These gaps and research opportunities resulted from the internal discussions and public events organized by the EUBrasilCloudFORUM project. The deliverable, built around a set of core concepts and following a well-defined process, should be seen as a working document that will serve as basis and support for developing the research roadmap later in the project.
