Ignacio Blanquer (EUBraBIGSEA coordinator - Spain) on EU-Brazil Cloud Collaboration

Universities in Brazil and Europe are benefitting from collaborating with each other in the area of Cloud Computing and Big Data Analysis. The Universitat Politècnica de València is just one example, thanks to the work of Professor Ignacio Blanquer, who is an associate professor there.

Professor Ignacio is the European Coordinator of the EUBra-BIGSEA, which focuses on the development of advanced QoS services for Big Data applications for Massive Connected Societies.  Ignacio was also the European Coordinator of EUBrazilCloudConnect (www.eubrazilcloudconnect.eu) and lead UPV activities in the EUBrazilOpenBio. Indeed his collaboration with Brazil dates back to 2006, with his participation in the EELA project. He comments:

“Being part of EU-Brazil collaborative project, has allowed me and my team to be an important communication channel in cloud between Europe and Brazil. Now we know how Brazilian researchers are organised and what are the right channels to communicate with them. Plus, we are also aware who are the most relevant stakeholders at both political and research level”

Professor Blanquer was a key speaker at the EUBrasilCloudFORUM WCN and Cloudscape Brazil events, which took place in Porto Alegre during Brazilian Computing Society Congress. As well as chairing a session on Cloud Federation & Open Science Cloud at cross-regional level, he was also a panellist in sessions on Realistic Networking in generic multi-site Cloud Deployments & the chair of a session on charting future directions for a EU-Brazil Open Science Cloud environment for 2017.

In the EUBra-BIGSEA project Professor Blanquer and his team are learning how to manage high amounts of data, while extracting value and knowledge. Brazil is a massive producer of data from several disciplines, like biodiversity, epidemiology and transportation. On the other hand, Brazil is learning how cloud services can provide value to the data processing and the importance of standards.

The EUBrasilCloudFORUM provides a platform to showcase collaboration between Brazil and Europe in cloud research such as EUBra-BIGSEA highlighting mutual benefits. Furthermore, EUBrasilCloudFORUM aims to facilitate the establishment of an organisational cooperation model to support the technical and policy dialogues, which enables the EU and Brazil to formulate and develop a common strategy and approach for Research & Innovation in Cloud Computing in line with the priorities of each region.
